2008 Harrogate in Bloom competition for schools

'Straytown'

Around 200 children entered this year's competition for schools, producing maps, pictures and laws for Straytown...and some had the opportunity to present the results to the Mayor and Council.

Six children from Western Primary School read out the top ten new laws at the start of the Council meeting on Wednesday 16 July and talked about it on the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio York.

Participating schools:

Rossett School

Saltergate Infants School

St Peter's Primary School

Western Primary School

The top ten laws:

1: Cardboard, tin, glass and plastic should be recycled – we would like more recycling facilities

2: Everyone should put rubbish in the bins, and people should get into trouble if they drop litter

3: People should use a bike instead of a car whenever possible. We should not allow cars in the town centre and there should be more cycle paths

4: We should use more solar energy

5: There should be more parks and woodland for children and adults to enjoy

6: There should be more sporting facilities and clubs, like horse riding and golf, and these should be free of charge so everyone keeps healthy and has fun

7: There should be no smoking, drugs or alcohol in the town centre

8: People should not swear or use bad language

9: People should respect all flowers, plants and trees

10: We should all have lots of fun and smile.
