2009 Harrogate in Bloom summer garden competitions
Small hotel (20 bedrooms or less; ETA/AA reg) category
Anyone in the hospitality trade knows that making a good first impression is vital and your premises’ appearance is very important, both for your publicity photographs as well as generating a welcoming ambience upon arrival. Harrogate is blessed with many fine buildings, many of which can be enhanced with stylish entrance areas - from traditional hanging baskets, window boxes or containers of bedding plants to contemporary planting. Good design should complement the architecture, both in use of colour and scale.
Closing date for entries: Monday 29 June
Judging will take place between 13 – 26 July
A trophy will be presented to the overall category winner, but all entrants are eligible for a Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver or Bronze award or a Certificate of Merit – so in theory, everyone (or indeed no-one!) could win a gold.
“First impressions”: the size of your property doesn’t matter. Only the front garden area between the street & building will be judged*. It’s the way you have used the available space that will count
Judges will be looking for:
- a good first impression and overall design
- planting which is appropriate in colour and scale to the surroundings, with summer interest
- containers (if any) of appropriate size and style
- paving, paths etc (if any) which complement the surroundings and are well maintained
- plants which are in good condition, apparently disease free and well maintained (dead-headed, watered, pruned, etc)
- the whole area should be well swept & litter free
