Help us make Harrogate Bloom! (no garden required)
Last July, 86 businesses in Harrogate town centre displayed over 130 mini scarecrows in their windows as part of Harrogate’s entry in the 2008 Yorkshire in Bloom competition. These had been made by local Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and the judges were suitably impressed: “The scarecrow competition greatly supported the entry” & “the group should be complimented on the innovative ways they have engaged with the town's children & young people. Harrogate went on to win a coveted Gold Award and a place representing Yorkshire in the national Britain in Bloom finals in 2009.
This year we will ask the shops to display flowers in their windows during judging week (early August) – and this is where we need your help. We would like all Harrogate’s community groups, not just those involving children, to make….
...individual flowers ...bunches of flowers... flower arrangements... big flowers...small flowers... paper flowers...knitted flowers...fabric flowers...
We would prefer the flowers to be made from recycled materials if at all possible, as 25% of the marks in Britain in Bloom are awarded for ‘Environmental Responsibility’, but if you’re a dab hand at origami, cross stitch or sugar craft, don’t be put off! Another 25% of the marks are for ‘Community Participation’ so as you can see, this project will go a long way in helping us achieve these objectives.
And as all the girls and businesses who took part last year will tell you…it’s also great fun!
