Marie Curie Field of Hope flowers in Harrogate
Milton Way in Harrogate is famous for its wonderful flowering cherry trees. But now thanks to Harrogate in Bloom’s response to Marie Curie to create a Field of Hope, this path across the Stray (between Leeds Road and Royal Bridge on York Place) will become a host of golden daffodils this spring.
Last November, Harrogate’s Marie Curie Care support group planted 18,000 bulbs with help from the 25 Platoon of the Army Foundation College, Harrogate in Bloom, the Rotary Club of Harrogate, Harrogate Borough Council’s parks’ team and staff from the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Councillor John Fox, Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate who planted the first bulb returned to view the display. He was accompanied by Marie Curie fundraisers, members of Harrogate in Bloom and the Rotary Club of Harrogate.
The bulbs were planted to celebrate the charity’s 60 years of providing home nursing care.
By sponsoring a daffodil bulb in memory of a loved one or just to support the local Marie Curie nurses, people have helped to raise vital funds to enable more terminally ill cancer patients to stay at home surrounded by family and friends.
Pam Grant, President of Harrogate in Bloom says that members of the group were keen to support this project. She said: “This sponsorship not only provided funding for this very worthwhile charity but this colourful Field of Hope will bring pleasure to many people. We are grateful to the Marie Curie support group for helping us add to our floral exhibits. Milton Way will be a carpet of colour every spring and the memory of loved ones will live on.”
