Bees are very important visitors to our gardens. Plants make a sweet liquid called nectar and they store it in their flowers. Bees just LOVE nectar, and as they fly from flower to flower to sip the nectar, their bodies get covered with sticky stuff called pollen. Then when they land on the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off. This is called POLLINATION, and it is how plants make seeds.
Without pollination, we wouldn’t have wheat in the fields or apples on the trees so bees are VERY important to farmers and gardeners who grow our food. Unfortunately, bees are finding it quite difficult to survive at the moment, so it is important for us all to do what we can to help them. One way is to plant flowers which have lots of nectar in our parks and gardens.
There are three different ways to enter this competition:
Draw a picture or a plan of a bee’s favourite garden, showing all the different things that make it a special place to visit.
Imagine you are a bee and then write a page in your bee diary, telling us about all the things you saw and the places you visited that day.
Write a song, poem or a short play (no more than 5 minutes long) about bees. It can be serious or funny and if you and your friends would like to record it and send it to us on a CD, that would be even better. But don’t forget to send us a copy of the words too!
Important:
On the back of each entry, we need
first name & surname or name of group (this will appear on the certificate so please ensure we have the correct spelling)
age
school
Entries can be as individuals, pairs or a group and each entry will be awarded a Harrogate in Bloom certificate (Gold/ Silver Gilt/ Silver/ Bronze/ Merit).
Copyright for all entries will be transferred to Harrogate in Bloom. Some entries may be published, in full or in part, with first name, age and/or school.
Results will be announced in September 2010.
The judges’ decision is final.
