2010: filming with the BBC

2011: our BBC nectar rich project continues
- a personal view by Mary Bond

18 January 2011

As proposed last year, Paul Hervey-Brookes, the young designer we met at Chelsea Flower Show, was invited to a meeting in Harrogate to look into the possibility of designing a nectar-rich bed in a prominent town centre position at the top of Montpellier Gardens, at the Pierhead. He was also shown a central bed in Valley Gardens and everyone was so impressed with his initial suggestions, he was asked to prepare concept drawings for both sites..

1 March 2011

Paul's planting plans for the two sites are in and they look fascinating:
an In-Flight garden at the top of Montpellier Hill, which will be planted to attract birds and winged insects to this urban island site and a Nectar Bar in Valley Gardens with perennials and habitat structures. Harrogate in Bloom has contributed a substantial sum towards this from the proceeds from last year's crocus project.

The plans will be on display at our Pavilions of Harrogate event on Sunday 20 March, 2.00- 4.30pm. Entry and parking free. Do come along and let us know what you think

Paul Hervey-Brookes' new In-Flight and Nectar Bar beds on
Montpellier Hill and Valley Gardens respectively are starting to fill out...

:5 July 2011 ..three weeks later.

The Montpellier bed has bulked up and the thistle like-buds on the majestic Onopordon acanthium are just about to open, but the most notable difference has been in the Nectar Bar bed in Valley Gardens (right)

Paul's clever use of yellow, purple and white flowers, which are especially attractive to pollinators, look great and, according to the gardeners, the bed is generating a lot of interest from visitors!

Thursday 28 July

Sarah Raven and the BBC team paid their final visit to the town to catch up on what we'd been doing since we last met. The weather was perfect and the town, particularly Valley Gardens, was looking great. We can't do any more now so it'll be interesting to see how we all come across in the final edit. I think I may have to watch it from behind a cushion! You know when there's usually a Mrs Grumpy character in these sort of documentaries, especially at the start? I have a horrible feeling that could be me....

The programme incidentally is now called Bees, Butterflies & Blooms and will comprise three hour-long episodes, each based round a city, a rural community or a town (Harrogate). It will be shown on BBC2 and should be transmitted in Spring 2012. You can get up-to-the minute details here on Facebook>>
