2011 Nectar rich seed project

Nectar rich logo

It's now 2011 and our work with the BBC on pollination continues....

Whilst the debate on whether to produce a national bee-friendly logo continues far far away, we're pressing ahead and running our very own scheme in Harrogate this year.

We've decided we want to get a slightly broader message across, however. We're just as keen to attract other pollinating insects into our gardens such as butterflies and hoverflies so we've gone for a very simple message: NECTAR RICH

Garden centres
So the logo is designed, the garden centres are on board - now how do we spread the word?

1. Take one kilo of Pictorial Meadows Candy Mix>> annual nectar-rich flower seeds
2. Spoon (yes, spoon!) into tiny cellophane bags- all 1950 of them!
3 Staple the bags onto the information leaflet
4. Tie into bundles of 13 (that's 150 in total)

Now here's the interesting part...

Every bundle that Harrogate in Bloom hands out....

The recipient keeps one pack of seeds for themselves and then passes three packs to each of four friends - preferably the sort who won't put it in the bin or stuff it in a drawer!

Each of those four friends keeps one pack of seeds for themselves and passes the remaining two packs on to two friends or neighbours.

So each initial bundle of 13 gets distributed across the town and surrounding area - sort of like a pyramid selling scheme BUT IT'S ALL FREE!! No catch. Just a great opportunity to provide 1950 extra patches of nectar rich flowers for our pollinating insects to enjoy.

And the final result? Absolutely fabulous!

We are delighted to have the support of five local garden centres.
They will be displaying our new logo showing which of their stock plants are....well, you can see for yourselves!

We're right bee-hind you!
