2012 community project: floral crowns

HM Queen Elizabeth: Diamond Jubilee
Jubilee weekend: 2–5 June 2012

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee takes place in 2012, marking 60 years of The Queen’s reign and the celebrations will centre around the first weekend in June.

Harrogate in Bloom has been invited to take part in the national RHS Britain in Bloom campaign in 2012 and as well as marking the Olympics, we also wish to use the Queen’s Jubilee as one of our themes for next year.

To do well in Britain in Bloom, we need to show horticultural excellence, and we’re sure you’ll agree that’s something that Harrogate does rather well! Equally important, however, is community participation and in recent years, we have run some successful projects - making flower or butterfly displays - which have enabled residents in care homes to get involved too.

So for 2012, we would like to invite your residents to make floral crowns, in honour of the Queen, and to submit a photo, or collage of photos, of them being worn on the Jubilee weekend. Please note, they will not be judged – this is all about taking part!

the crowns can be made of fresh, artificial or home-made flowers – feel free to add any accessories of your choice! – and they must be able to be worn

the final photo (or collage) should be NO BIGGER than A3
(297mm × 420mm or 11.69” × 16.54”) and can be portrait or landscape

one A3 entry per care home

all entries should be received by Friday 22 June 2012

The photos will then be mounted on a set of display boards which will be exhibited at various venues in the town over the summer, and will form part of the display for the Britain in Bloom judges when they end their tour in the Sun Pavilion in August.

We hope you will agree that this is an excellent opportunity for your residents to contribute towards Harrogate’s 2012 Britain in Bloom campaign and also that it will allow local people and visitors alike an opportunity to see that life doesn’t necessarily stop when someone goes into residential care. We would also be happy to arrange to bring the finished display round to your care home so that the participants can have the opportunity to see the full project. There will also be an invitation to the Harrogate in Bloom awards presentation in September.
